What to Expect in Your First Year of Nursing School
Starting nursing school can be an exciting and challenging experience. It's a time of...
Nursing is a diverse profession. The US has over 3.8 million registered nurses (RNs), approximately 85% of whom are employed in nursing. RNs can work in other healthcare fields, notwithstanding these statistics. Aspiring careers can choose from several nursing-related careers and degrees.
Perhaps you want to help people but don’t want to work in a crowded hospital or emergency department. Healthcare administrative employment may suit you. Maybe you want a more consistent schedule than nurses have. Instead of seeing new patients every day, you may choose to visit patients routinely. Maybe you don’t have time for nursing school. There are alternatives wherever you are.
In truth, the healthcare industry has numerous potential careers and fields of study that may be completed in two years or less. Like nursing, several healthcare graduate degree only require an associate degree. The top majors like nursing in timeframe, topic matter, and career results are shown below.
Medical Aid
Medical assistants work with doctors and nurses in hospitals, clinics, doctors’ offices, and more. Clinical and administrative tasks are often performed by medical assistants. They greet patients, make appointments, collect vital signs, prepare exam rooms, and more. The breadth of labor and autonomy distinguish medical assistants from nurses. Nurses perform under a license, while medical assistants offer basic patient care and administrative chores.
However, medical assisting majors benefit from a shorter length of study. You just need postsecondary education to become a medical assistant. A certificate or associate degree takes 12–18 months for most medical assistants. Human biology, medical terminology, medical legislation and ethics, laboratory techniques, office administration, diagnostics, and more are included in medical assistant programs.
Biology
Health science is a good alternative to nursing for people who desire to investigate healthcare possibilities or work behind the scenes. A health science graduate degree may lead to numerous jobs, from healthcare administrator to medical biller and coder. Medical research associates, health educators, and licensed dieticians are some health science majors’ careers. This major is for health and scientific professionals who want to explore all their alternatives.
Health science majors might choose a degree level and a job. For instance, Goodwin University offers associate and bachelor’s degrees in health science. Due to the enlarged curriculum and level of study, a bachelor’s degree in health science can lead to more advanced employment results. Public health, healthcare, psychology, chemistry, research methodologies, and more are included in health science programs.
Raspatory Therapy
Students who want to make a difference in healthcare, help others, and specialize in a medical discipline can pursue respiratory therapy. Like their name indicates, respiratory therapists address breathing disorders. Asthma, emphysema, bronchitis, lung disease, and COVID-19 are common conditions treated by respiratory therapists. Emergency departments, acute care units, nursing homes, outpatient clinics, and sleep centers use them.
Respiratory therapists, like nurses, need an associate degree to start. Cardiopulmonary anatomy, critical care, pediatric respiratory care, mechanical ventilation, and more are covered in an associate degree in respiratory care. To prepare for hands-on work and direct patient care, students must undergo clinical as part of their graduate degree program.
Assisting Occupational Therapy
Like nurses, occupational therapy assistants (OTAs) offer direct patient care. However, OTAs focus on individuals with minimal function that disrupts their daily lives. Patients learn skills and motor function via OTAs. This may involve assisting a patient who damaged his hand at work. It may entail teaching a disabled person skills. Helping a youngster learn mental or emotional abilities may be required. An OTA helps patients live well.
Occupational therapy assistants must have an associate degree to practice, like nurses. A full-time associate Professional degree in occupational therapy assisting takes 16 months. Human mobility and function, mental health, and working with adult, pediatric, and geriatric patients are included in this major.
Histology
Do you like science, lab work, and research? Do you prefer a non-patient-facing medical role? Histology is a fascinating discipline that few prospective students know about. Plant and animal cells and tissues are studied in histology. Histologic technicians and technologists investigate these cells to discover microscopic structures, detect anomalies, and help physicians diagnose illness. Histology is essential for disease detection.
Histology majors can get a certificate or associate Professional degree in one to two years. Courses cover Histology Techniques, Histology Laboratory Application, Staining and Fixation, a clinical experience, and more.
Beyond Nursing
You can make a difference in nursing. Many consider nurses the healthcare industry’s backbone. However, nursing is not for everyone and can be difficult. You can make a difference in people’ lives through healthcare occupations and degrees like nursing. All of the following possibilities can be completed in two years or less. You may take the opportunity an earn a Professional degree.
